The Standing Police Monitoring Committee
The Committee P has been established under the auspices of the Federal Parliament to provide the latter with an external monitoring body for the police.
Created in 1991, it really started to function mid 1993. By examining complaints, inspection inquiries done by the Investigation Department P and drawing on information from a variety of sources, the Committee P has a pretty accurate picture of the state of policing at any given time. This overall picture gives the Committee P the necessary overview to carry out its watchdog role for the benefit of the Federal Parliament. The Committee P accomplishes this mission by means of many activities among which the investigation of complaints of citizens. The Committe P does not fulfill an ombudsman function and was not established to solve or mediate in individual problems of complainants with the police.
